Surviving Spouse of a First Responder’s Residence Homestead Exemption (New for 2018)

NEW FOR 2018 SURVIVING SPOUSE OF A FIRST RESPONDER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Effective January 1, 2018, a surviving spouse of a first responder killed in the line of duty may be eligible to receive an exemption from taxation of the total appraised value of the same property to which the disabled veteran’s exemption applied if:

  • The surviving spouse has not remarried since the death of the disabled veteran; and
  • is an eligible survivor for purposes of Chapter 615, Government Code, as determined by the Employees Retirement System of Texas under that chapter

The application for this new residence homestead exemption will be available in January 2018.
